SACRAMENTO, Calif., July 6 (Our California Times) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom accused President Donald Trump on Monday of ordering a Justice Department investigation into him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, calling it a “fishing expedition” and saying Trump had put them on a “hit list.”

People familiar with the matter told several outlets that at least one federal inquiry tied to Newsom’s circle began during the Biden administration, before Trump returned to office, and that the work started in California rather than in Washington.

Those accounts said the investigations were connected to the U.S. attorney’s office in the Eastern District of California and grew out of whistleblower complaints and local reports in Sacramento. A Justice Department source familiar with the matter said one inquiry involving former Newsom chief of staff Dana Williamson was opened under Biden.

Williamson later pleaded guilty in May in a separate corruption case that did not implicate Newsom, according to reporting on the case. The full scope of the federal inquiries remains unclear, and public reporting has not identified any charging documents against Newsom.
