MOORESVILLE, N.C., July 11 (Nationwide Times) — The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled about 554,780 Kobalt 24V and 48V yard power tools because their USB-C rechargeable lithium-ion batteries can short-circuit and catch fire if they are charged while still inserted in the tool.
What products are included?
The recall covers Kobalt string trimmers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, chainsaws, pruning saws, power cleaners and bristle brush kits. The batteries involved came in 3.0Ah, 4.0Ah, 5.0Ah, 6.0Ah and 8.0Ah sizes, and each one has a USB-C charging port. According to the CPSC, the products were sold at Lowe’s stores nationwide and on Lowes.com from January 2026 through May 2026.
Why is there a risk?
The CPSC says charging the battery through the USB-C port while the battery remains inside the yard tool can cause the battery to short-circuit. That creates a fire hazard. The products were imported by Greenworks North America LLC, doing business as Greenworks Tools, of Mooresville, North Carolina. The recalled tools were made in China and Vietnam.
What should owners do?
Greenworks Tools and the CPSC say consumers should stop charging the recalled batteries through the USB-C port while the batteries are inserted in the tools. The company is offering a free replacement battery without a USB-C port, along with a charger adapter, updated product manual, warning label and prepaid shipping label to return the recalled battery.
Have there been reports of fires or injuries?
Greenworks Tools reported 34 cases in which the batteries smoked, sparked or caught fire while they were inserted in a tool and charging through the USB-C port. The CPSC said no injuries or property damage had been reported in the information released with the recall.
The CPSC recall number is 26-611.
