NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., July 6 (Our Newport Beach) — Newport Beach police arrested 402 people during Fourth of July celebrations, with about half of the arrests coming from a single incident on the Balboa Peninsula Saturday night, the department said.

Police said the crowd near 28th Street repeatedly refused lawful dispersal orders before officers declared an unlawful assembly. More than 350 officers from the Newport Beach Police Department and 17 regional law enforcement agencies then moved in to clear the area, restore emergency access and protect residents and visitors, according to a department press release.

The arrests were made during the holiday weekend response in Newport Beach, California.
