BENTONVILLE, Ark., July 7 (DC Times Online) — Walmart Inc. (NYSE: WMT) and Sam’s Club are cutting prices on thousands of summer items nationwide, a move that puts one of America’s biggest retailers at the center of the fight over grocery costs. For shoppers, the biggest savings are on backyard staples: Walmart said fresh sweet corn on the cob fell from 68 cents to 25 cents each, fresh red cherries from $11.18 to $5.63, and a pound of 73% ground beef roll from $6.74 to $5.94. Sam’s Club said it is lowering prices on more than 250 items, including its Member’s Mark ground beef, chicken wings and beef hot dogs.
The scale matters because Walmart has built its U.S. business around value, and summer promotions are a way to keep traffic moving when customers are watching every dollar. The company said the cuts cover groceries, household essentials, outdoor items, toys and apparel, and Walmart U.S. chief merchant Julie Barber said the chain is making “investments in price” to help customers save for barbecues, vacations and weekly shopping. That framing points to a familiar retail strategy: use visible price cuts on everyday items to reinforce a low-price image even when households remain sensitive to food inflation.
The announcement also became part of a political message. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that Walmart was lowering prices “at my Administration’s request” and said the move was tied to the nation’s 250th birthday. Walmart’s statement, as reflected in its release cited by news organizations, does not confirm that claim, leaving the retailer’s pricing decision and the White House’s role as separate questions. Trump also said ground beef would be cut “by almost 15%,” while Walmart’s own figures for one ground-beef item imply a smaller drop of about 12%.
For investors and competitors, the key point is that the price cuts show Walmart is still willing to use margin pressure as a weapon in a price-sensitive summer season. For members of Sam’s Club and customers in Walmart stores, the immediate effect is cheaper barbecue basics. Walmart has not said whether the markdowns are a short-term promotion, a broader pricing reset or any change in supplier costs.
